Evening. The sand’s down there, it’s been down there a while. Do you require a driftwood stick to write or draw in the sand?

Jelani Sasso · Anguilla

Sand becomes glass.
Glass becomes lens.
Lens facilitates image.
Image renders art.

Ninety-six photographs of the seabed at Anguilla, each a 1/1. Every one seeds a living bed of sand — drawn by the contract itself — that moves with the tide, the weather of the chain, and whatever passes through it.

Every lens begins as sand. The glass that made these photographs was once a seabed like the one they show — silica, sorted by the ocean, ground until it could resolve light.

The work

Twenty-four photographs, each divided into four. Ninety-six works in all, and no two alike. Which four share an origin is not disclosed; that is left to those who look carefully. The mint is random — you meet your QUARTZ when it arrives.

What a collector receives

The photograph

Jelani Sasso soaks in the shallows at beaches around Anguilla in the evenings, looking down at a seabed that appears still. Each frame is a 1/1, held at full resolution on Arweave, its fingerprint sealed in the contract.

Its living bed

Claimed free by the holder. The photograph is redrawn grain by grain by the contract, in its own proportions — and from that moment it is no longer still.

Written in Sand

Whatever you draw at the shore is minted along with your QUARTZ: your own hand, kept on chain, drawn back by the contract in the square you drew it.

Composed

Reunite the four works of one hidden origin and the photograph is made whole: a Composed work mints itself, under a pastel of its own. Twenty-four exist.

Composed · twenty-four

The rarest works in the collection: a photograph made whole again, under a pastel of its own. The collector marks that share its origin take on the same colour. Signed prints of the living beds may follow in future.

Collect QUARTZ

Ask the High Sea Cowboy for a driftwood stick and leave your mark in the sand. One transaction collects a photograph and mints your mark along with it. The living bed is claimed free, whenever you like.

Photographs

Held on Arweave, permanently. Each file’s sha256 is written on chain, so any collector can verify their photograph is the one the artist sealed.

Everything else

Drawn by the contract itself: the living beds, the collector marks, the metadata. No servers, nothing to maintain.
